St Maarten / St Martin, in either it’s Dutch or French spelling, is renowned for it’s plentiful 37 beaches crammed into just 37 square miles, but the ‘jewel’ in the crown of St Maarten/ St Martin beaches, and known throughout the world, is Orient Beach.

[I:http://www.uniquearticlewizard.com/extras/pics/smigsxmimage6.gif]

Known as much for it’s nudity as it is for it’s fine dining and water sports, Orient beach seems to have enough for everyone and at over 2 kms long it certainly has room for it!

Orient beach is as much a favorite spot for St Martin (french side) residents, as it is for tourists from hotels, timeshare or the behemoth cruise ships that dock in Philipsburg (the other side of the island on the Dutch side, but ironically, only 15 minutes drive!). Here’s why -

With hardly anyone around at sunrise, St Martin residents are out in small number, taking a morning stroll or walking their dogs whilst American tourists are strolling naked. With no beach chairs or umbrellas yet assembled in their military rows on this vast beach, there is little to hamper the speed-walker or sloucher.

Mid-morning the first sun-worshippers arrive shortly followed by bus-loads from the cruise ships who have pre-arranged package deals with restaurants and beach bars and quickly settle into neat rows of chairs and umbrellas. With more than enough space to go around the quiet-seeker will have no problem finding unpopulated parts of Orient Beach.

Lunchtime at Orient beach can be as simple as a burger and fries for $10 or a gourmet lunch with Crystal champagne for a $100 a head – it’s your choice. A mid-range restaurant that is a personal favorite is Palm Beach which is tastefully furnished with thoughtful spacing between beach chairs (which are free if you’re dining or drinking). Dining is a simple but elegant pleasure and will not let down even the most discerning of palates. A cool chic environment.

Many people visit Orient Beach for the spectacle of open and carefree nudity but the fact remains all the water sports in the world can be found here.

Sunset cocktails are compulsory it seems, after a tough day in the sun, and Bikini Beach bar is the best when it comes to excellent cocktails and evening service. And if you’ve regained your appetite there is the fabulous French village called, erml…. ‘Le Village’, where you’ll find uniquely complimentary restaurants for all tastes and budgets. A great place for adults – AND kids to socialize in a care-free environment.

Rumor has it that a week in Orient Beach is not long enough, but as a cruiser you might only get a few hours; but even after such a short ‘sampling’ a lot of cruisers become ‘land-lubbers’ and come back for a longer stay to sample everything on offer.

In the last instalment of this series we took a brief look at a few popular cruising styles such as family, romance and singles cruises. Now we will delve into much less mainstream cruising styles that are sure to appeal to any character. Keep in mind there are many opportunities for physically disabled passengers to participate in most cruise activities. Be sure to ask the travel booking agent for a full listing of all disability-friendly programs and facilities. Enjoy, and take note of those you may wish to try!

Holiday Cruises are quite popular with all demographics, and are not always centered solely on winter holidays. There are also those inspired by international traditions or national holidays, such as the American Independence Day. Caribbean cruises may also incorporate the national holiday of the nation being visited as part of the cruise theme; for example, Cinqo de Mayo.

Gourmet Cruises, or Foodie Cruising is an increasingly popular style that appeals to many people. Celebrity chefs are invited to create menus with decadent cuisine indicative of popular ingredients used at the final destination of the cruise. Alternatively, a team of world class chefs will put together a series of lessons or lectures about a particular style of food. Gourmet cruising can be a great deal of fun and a chance to try foods one would not normally have access to.

Fitness Cruises have become just as popular as family cruises, in part because of all the incredible amenities now available on most ships. Aside from the usual gym and pool, many of the newer cruise ships have climbing walls, putting greens, running circuits and more. Fitness themed cruises may include an itinerary loaded with stops at world class golf courses in Florida or the Caribbean. Or if something slightly more musical is desired, there are dancing cruises. The ship doesn’t actually dance, but everyone on the ship is able to take part in lessons, shows, competitions and tournaments in many different styles of dance.

Recreational Cruises are probably the most relaxed, even the most mainstream of all cruising styles. They are offer a chance for passengers to participate in a variety of activities including kayaking, ziplining, fishing, swimming and of course the very necessary spa visits. Many activities on ship are perfect for those seeking a little recreation with their relaxation, as they don’t require a lot of set up or training. If you are not sure what you want, try a recreational cruise.
